Some say this, and some say that about how the west really was...It really doesn't matter, since the West lives in our minds the way we want it to be...and the way Luke Short, Louis L'amour and Zane Gray wanted it to be.
Why there are times I can smell the hair burning from the brands...There are times, late in the evening, if I listen really close, I can hear the curry comb running down the  tired muscles of the hero's horse. But for that I will admit it's necessary to listen very carefully. And it must be late, before the crickets begin to chirp. It's not as loud as a gun belt and holster being hung up on the nail on the inside of the door, or the last boot falling to the floor.
Listen carefully to the way the folks back there talked, such as, 'He was mad 'nough to eat the devil and spit out his horns.'...
"so mad he could swallow a horned toad backwards.'
